POP UP RIG

Mechanics

A firm favourite for Danny Fairbrass and Ian Russell, this small, inconspicuous pop-up presentation works very well over spod mix when carp are encouraged to feed close to the bottom.

Danny has outwitted some monster carp on this little rig to over 40lb – and yes, he was using a tiny size 10 hook too. Contrary to popular belief, the smaller the hook the stronger it is. More importantly, though, the smaller the hook the sharper it is.

Although it can be used with a small pop-up, it tends to work best with two grains of imitation corn, anchored by a split shot. These two grains of corn waft millimetres above the lake bed, waiting to be engulfed. To prevent the hair from tangling on the cast, fish the hook bait on a sliding, micro rig ring in conjunction with a size 10 Wide Gape or Kurv – the points on these are like needles. A fish only has to sniff and it’ll get hooked.

Finally, mount the hook and bait onto a stripped back section of coated braid. This allows it to act naturally on the lake bed rather than sitting there stiff on a brittle material. Consequently, use with Hybrid Soft or Hybrid Stiff. To enhance attraction around the hook bait, and prevent unwanted tangles, use in conjunction with a PVA stick.
