Lee Wheeler - Hand Sharpened Hooks

Lee is an advocate for hand sharpening his hooks. Favouring an 'X' pattern for its thicker gauge, Lee spends time perfecting each hook to get the sharpness he requires.

Hook points is a subject I know has been written about a lot in recent years, but it’s a subject a really do value the importance of in my angling.

I think it’s always good to have a few hook options in your tackle box, but for the bulk of my angling these days, I’ll be using a hand sharped Wide Gape X. Although still very sharp, the thicker gauge that the 'X' pattern provides, gives me plenty of confidence that the hook will never let me down. Fishing some really weedy pits, where bites are few and far between, I need to land everything I hook. Battles can be intense to say the least, so strength has to be at the forefront of my approach. The X pattern just gives you that extra strength which is something I really like.

Wide Gape X my hook of choice.

These are still mega sharp straight out the pack, but I do like to spend time on each hook, inspecting them and sharpening the point further, ensuring it runs smooth down to a needle point hook. I always store them in a hook box, point down to protect them.

Good To Go

I like to have a good few packs hand sharpened and ready, so when I’m angling, I’m not having to keep checking and sharpening hooks, but can quickly go to my box and grab a pre-sharpened hook that’s good to go.
