Drop Your Lead When Zigging
You'll notice that a lot of experienced zig anglers use heavier leads than normal for this style of fishing. This allows them to successfully hook a carp that sucks in a bait up to 15ft away from the lead system! What you don't want, is to have that big lead banging around near the rod tip as you attempt to net a hard-fighting carp. The best solution is to drop the lead each time you hook a fish.
This particular setup is used by Martin Pick for his zigging, and you'll notice that he doesn't even use a Tail Rubber. Instead, to ensure that a hooked fish drops the heavy lead, Picky ties a piece of Kwik Melt PVA tape around the lead clip to make sure the lead stays in place on the cast.
