On Top - Pete Castle

There are a few different levels of carp lakes on the syndicate I’m currently fishing. That is, some lakes are a lot easier than others and I’ve been spending my mornings on the runs water brushing up on my floater skills before moving onto one of the harder lakes in the afternoon to put my skills to the test.
This has worked well on a couple of occasions now. The first day started with a 7 fish catch on the runs lake, with fish up to 20lb and finishing the session with a cracking, old 25lb common from one of the harder lakes in the afternoon. On another trip I basically did the same thing, but on this occasion I got bored very quickly on the runs water and after catching a couple moved straight onto a harder lake. This proved to be a lot more of a challenge and even though a few fish were taking the odd bait they were not feeding with confidence.
I persisted throughout the morning and into the early afternoon before noticing a fish that would only take when the baits had drifted toward some reeds about 40yrd to my left. It was not an easy cast and after watching other fish spook earlier in the day I had to drift the controller into position from quite a long way off. The slight wind was in my favour, but the cast was not easy and after a few frustrating moments I finally got the controller into position.
The fish took a few freebies close by and I watched intensely, anticipating that mine might go next. The light wasn't great and I kept losing sight of my hook bait as it moved through the reflection of the reeds. Just as I was about to lose hope the fish finally nailed the hook bait. It took it with such confidence and I knew I was in before I’d even connected with the fish. After a very good fight on light tackle in deep water the fish turned out to be a cracking upper twenty mirror. I was a little disappointed that she didn’t go over thirty, but who could complain at catching such a beautiful fish.

Good Luck, Pete Castle
