Monks Pit big 'un falls to Ian Bailey!

After enduring a tough spring, Korda’s Ian Bailey got his season back on track with the big ‘un, Porky, from Monks Pit at 51lb 12oz!

Ian has since returned to the Cambridgeshire venue and bagged several more, including a cracking mirror known as the Peach at 44lb 8oz.

He revealed: “The weather had been going from one extreme to the other and had made the fishing tough – wrapped up like an onion one day and applying sun lotion the next!

“My chosen venue for this year is Monks Pit, which is slap bang in the middle of the A14 and boasts a massive stock of big fish, and has been a stepping stone for me from my days on Elstow.

“I’d fished the winter to get a feel for it, but my only action was an aborted take on a zig in February. Due to working at the angling shows I wasn’t able to get down for my first proper session until April, and I managed to get in a popular swim called the Swamp. The trip started off badly when I lost two fish, but then I changed my rig and landed the next two, including a 30lb mirror, with all my bites coming on yellow pop-ups fished over Mainline MK1 boilies.

“I wasn’t able to get down for a while but kept in contact with the other lads and a swim called the Double had started to produce and it had a real track record for doing the big ones. I managed to get in there on my next session, and strangely I had dreamt that I was going to catch it from there, and the dream was so vivid that I could even see myself holding it!

“I opted to fish twelve inches of Hybrid Stiff and a size 6 Wide Gape hook, baited with a Salty Squid balanced hookbait, and this was fished over 3kg of MK1 plus hemp and corn. This was fished in conjunction with a Hybrid lead clip, Dark Matter tubing and 15lb Touchdown main line. I had a mid-twenty common, then at first light I had the bite from hell and instantly knew which fish it was by the sheer weight and power of it. After a mad battle I bundled Porky into the net and it was a new PB – to say I was over-the-moon was an understatement, I was floating!

“I’ve had a few more trips since then and landed some more, including a lovely mirror called the Peach at 44lb 8oz, which came just an hour after I cast out, and was another target of mine which I’d been talking about just before I had it – I suppose I’d better continue doing that as Black Spot and the Hartford Fish are my next targets!”
