BYCAC Is Back - Jack Bonner

It’s that time of year again, the return of the famous British Young Carp Angling Championships! Young Jack Bonner has competed for the past two years, with some success too. As a competitor of this years event, he gives us all the run down on how it works, how to apply if you haven’t already, the reasons why the competition is so good and why you shouldn’t miss out on the chance to become the next British champion.

“The event is being held at, quite simply, one of the best day ticket waters in the country, Linear Fisheries. This year is slightly different though, it’s moved from Brasenose Two and is now on Oxlease.

The Lake itself contains the complexes biggest carp, at a staggering 47lb and with an estimated 50 or more 30lb plus carp, there’s always the chance of a few PBs to be smashed among the action!

So, how does it work? Well, the competition consists of four individual day eliminators, which run from Monday the 4th August to Thursday the 7th. Eight lucky competitors from each eliminator will qualify for the 48-hour final, where the 2014 winner will be crowned. The scores are judged on the largest weight of fish rather than the total number of fish caught.

The event is sponsored by a large amount of big brands in the industry, which contribute to the superb goody bags that each competitor receives whether they qualify for the final or not. To enter you have to be 17 or under from the 1st of August 2014 and must have a parent or guardian supervision over the age of 18 to accompany you throughout the time you are participating in the event. Finally all that’s needed is a small fee of £39.00 pounds for entry.

Spodding over zigs and beds of particles with lots of corn is a must on any of the highly stocked waters on the complex and Oxlease is no exception. The carp in there just love it! My preferred rigs for the competition are solid bags as they guarantee a brilliant presentation so can be fished in whatever situation that you’re faced with. You only get 8 hours to catch in the qualifiers so this method really comes into its own under those pressures!

Previous winners of this prestigious event include Tom Dove, Jake Wildbore, Jake Taylor and many other big names all of whom have excelled further in their fishing and have become very successful in the carp fishing trade. So why miss out on the opportunity?

Unbelievably there are still spaces available for this years competition, so what are you waiting for? Get your application forms in now! I promise you, you wont regret it. I was unsure whether to apply to start with, but because of it I have met some lifelong friends and my angling has improved tenfold as a result of it.

Will it be you on top of the podium this year?

Jack Bonner.
