Brace of fifties for Billy Flowers!

Billy Flowers has been having an amazing run of success so far this year, and has already notched up three carp in excess of 50lb from waters in the UK!

He kicked his year off with his target fish, Flowers, at 50lb 6oz from Myths Pool, and now a visit to Holme Fen Fishery, in Cambridgeshire, has resulted in Billy banking a brace of mirrors scaling 51lb 14oz and 51lb 12oz within 24 hours of each other!

Billy revealed: “I had a very successful trip to Holme Fen last October, landing five fish in 48 hours, with four of those being 40s, up to just under 50lb. They were a great average size, so when my friend Dave Light asked if myself and Jamie Londers fancied joining him for another 48 hour session, we couldn’t wait to get there.

“Ten anglers are allowed on the fishery at a time and with the size of fish, it is usually a full house and there is a draw for swims at 11am on the Monday morning, and we then had until 11am on the Wednesday before we had to be off.

“We arrived at 10am and had a walk round and then met in the car park for the draw, where I came out last, but luckily Dave was second and got in a swim called the Pump Hole, and let me double up with him, as we’d agreed beforehand if one of us got a bad draw. This gave us access to a back bay where we’d seen fish that morning and there were lots of good looking spots in front of us. We decided to work together getting the rods out and then to take it in turns when we got a bite, as this seemed like the fairest way of doing it.

“We decided to fish for a bite at a time, opting for Fyber boilies and pink Cell pop-ups presented on Spinner rigs, and these were fished over a mixture of Fyber and Cell boilies, with lots of 10mm ones, plus hemp and a particle mix, with lots of added attraction from the matching glugs.

“Within a couple of hours we had six rods in position, and as the light began to fade a rod fished to the far margin pulled up tight and I was attached to my first carp of the session. After giving a good account of itself it was ready for the net and we were soon weighing it at 51lb 14oz, and buzzing to have had a fifty within just a few hours. Dave was next on the rods and within 20 minutes was playing a fish that smashed his PB and weighed 53lb 6oz!

“The night was quiet, but at first light I had a small one of 22lb 11oz and we had three more between us during the rest of the day – Dave landed fish of 48lb 12oz and 46lb 8oz, and I had another fifty, with another mirror of 51lb 12oz.

“We were both extremely happy with our result, and once again the night was quiet, but on our last morning I was awoken by a take and landed a dark mirror of 41lb 8oz, which turned out to be our last fish as Dave lost one as we were packing up.

“It was an amazing result, especially when you consider that the only other fish caught whilst we were there was a 41-pounder for Jamie,” he added.
